Access to clean water is a basic human right, yet for many rural communities across South Africa, it remains an everyday struggle. In Ward 12 of Thulamela Municipality, the community of Matangari in Thoyondou, Limpopo has faced years of severe water scarcity, which has affected thousands of residents and limited their opportunities for growth and development.

Recognising this urgent need, the Matangari Water Project was launched as part of the WDB Trust Zenzele Development Programme (ZDP), aimed at improving the quality of life for underserved communities through sustainable development interventions.

Addressing a Critical Water Crisis

Home to over 4,000 residents, Matangari had been experiencing a severe lack of access to safe drinking water. For years, women and children were forced to walk over one-kilometre multiple times each day to collect water from a single open and often contaminated water source shared by the entire village. During periods of drought, this source would frequently dry up, leaving families even more vulnerable.

This challenge highlighted the urgent need for a long-term and sustainable solution.

Building Partnerships for Impact

Through strategic stakeholder engagement, Zenzele partnered with Innovation: Africa to implement a solution that would provide reliable access to clean water for the community.

What initially began as a plan to install two water systems quickly expanded after exploratory drilling revealed substantial underground water reserves. This exciting discovery allowed the project to extend its reach and benefit four villages within the Matangari area: Tshiumoni, Tshitakani, Thondoni, and Tshiawelo.

Community-Driven Development in Action

A key component of the project has been meaningful community participation at every stage of implementation.

Local traditional leaders and community stakeholders were engaged through consultation meetings and village-wide assemblies to ensure transparency and community ownership of the project.

To create economic opportunities, 40 temporary construction jobs were created across project sites, with community members selected through a transparent democratic voting process designed to ensure fairness and equal opportunity.

In addition, local community members were trained to serve as water system operators, helping to ensure long-term technical sustainability and local capacity development.

Milestones Already Achieved

Several important milestones have already been successfully completed, including:

• Groundwater exploration confirming sufficient water supply

• Community consultation and stakeholder engagement processes

• Recruitment of local workforce and site security personnel

• Training of operators and establishment of local steering committees

• Borehole drilling and infrastructure development preparation

Creating Sustainable Change

The Matangari Water Project represents more than infrastructure development — it is an investment in dignity, health, and long-term community resilience.

By combining strategic partnerships, local economic empowerment, technical training, and community-led participation, the project is laying the foundation for sustainable development that will positively impact thousands of lives for years to come.
