For more than three decades, WDB Trust has been creating opportunities for women to build sustainable livelihoods and strengthen their families and communities. Originally established as a microfinance organisation, providing women in rural communities with access to financial services that were often beyond their reach, microfinance remains the Trust’s flagship programme today.
While access to finance continues to be a powerful catalyst for change, WDB Trust recognises that breaking the cycle of poverty requires more than financial inclusion alone. Through a holistic approach, the organisation complements its microfinance programme with skills development, leadership training, and psychosocial support, equipping women with the confidence, knowledge, and resilience to thrive.
Every loan we provide represents far more than financial assistance. It is an investment in potential, creating opportunities for women to build businesses, generate income, and shape brighter futures.
One such story is that of Phumudzo Mulaudzi, whose entrepreneurial journey demonstrates the transformative impact of microfinance in action.
A Business Built One Step at a Time
Phumudzo, a single mother of three from Dzwerani Village in Limpopo, joined the WDB Trust Microfinance programme in September 2024 with a clear goal: to grow a business that could provide a stable future for her family.
Her first loan of R3,000 enabled her to purchase ingredients and supplies to produce and sell atchar. Through careful financial management and hard work, she successfully repaid the loan within sixteen weeks.
Having demonstrated strong financial discipline, she qualified for a second loan of R5,000, which she reinvested in her business by increasing her stock. The additional inventory allowed her to better meet customer demand, strengthening both her reputation and her income.
As her confidence and business grew, so did her ambitions.
After repaying her second loan, Phumudzo secured a third loan of R5,000, using it to diversify her business. She expanded into prepared food, opening a small takeaway operation selling kotas, chips, and other popular food items. This marked an important turning point, allowing her to reach new customers and create additional income streams.
Growing Beyond Expectations
Today, Phumudzo operates from a rented restaurant space in Vyeboom, Vuwani, where her business continues to grow steadily each day.
Her success through the WDB Trust Microfinance programme also positioned her to access a larger micro-enterprise loan, which she used to purchase essential business equipment, including a gas refrigerator, gas stove, gas cylinder, sealing machine, and chip cutter. These investments have improved her efficiency, increased production capacity, and laid the foundation for continued growth.
The impact of her business extends well beyond commercial success. Through the profits she has earned, Phumudzo has been able to improve her family’s home by installing a roof-an achievement that speaks to the broader impact of economic empowerment on household stability, dignity, and long-term well-being.
More Than Finance
Phumudzo’s journey is a powerful reminder that when women are given access to opportunity, they create lasting change. Affordable finance, combined with determination and ongoing support, has enabled her to build a resilient business while improving the quality of life for her family.
Reflecting on her journey, she says:
“I am not turning back; forward I move, and greater achievements lie ahead in my journey of business.”
Creating Lasting Change
Stories like Phumudzo’s are why WDB Trust continues to invest in women. Every successful entrepreneur strengthens her household, contributes to her local economy, and inspires others to pursue their own ambitions.
As WDB Trust continues to expand its reach, its commitment remains unchanged: empowering women through accessible financial services while providing the skills, leadership development, and psychosocial support needed to create lasting, generational change.
Because when women thrive, families prosper, communities grow stronger, and poverty can be overcome—one opportunity at a time.
